I did not see that coming

Looks like I have to give credit to John McCain after savaging him earlier this week.

I don't know when he decided to vote NO on the Repeal Obamacare and Screw Over Americans Act, but he did and millions of Americans will get to keep their healthcare.

So, great job, John McCain. You surprised everyone. And this time in a good way.

Of course, the ACA isn't safe as long as Republicans are in power, so this fight isn't over. But for now, this is a good win.

It's possible that McCain did this entirely to table the entire thing for another year. Because of the way this was handled, any attempts to remove the ACA in the Senate now needs a 60-vote majority, which they won't have. By forcing this to the floor and voting against it, McCain essentially has forced a situation where the required majority is impossible, the Republicans can only flail about on it or can ignore it (risking pissing off their shrinking base), or must actually work to create a better plan by involving the other side of the aisle.

If this is what he actually did, it's masterful in terms of its politics.
