If you want to fight a war, you need to pay for it. LBJ tried to do the same thing--provide both guns and butter without paying for it and it didn't work. Obviously, Boehner would prefer to reduce social spending to maintain spending for the war, but it's not like there is some pile of money that we have to split up and that's all we have (although that's what Republicans think). That's the problem with the analogy they use comparing the country to an individual family; families have a finite amount of money that does not generally increase substantially. The country can always raise more money if it wants and it often makes sense to do so, just as it often makes sense for families to spend more money to invest in their kids' education or something.Marcnoreply@blogger.com
