Hitting on another socially sensitive topic, Kansas Sen. Sam Brownback received a mix of applause and boos when he said he supports a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.Yes! Marriage has nothing to do with universal human desires and needs. It has nothing to do with the cooperative benefits of creating a family.
"When you do these vast, social experiments — and that's what this is, when you redefine marriage — it's a vast, social experiment. They're not done in isolation. They impact the rest of the culture around you. When you take the sacredness out of marriage, you will drive the marriage rates down," he said. Republican Debate.
People only get married because it's like an exclusive country club. If just anyone can get into that club, why would I want to join? Sure, half of all people who get into the country club quit at some point. And, sure, completely ignorant, immature and immoral folk can get into the club so long as they meet the entry requirements (differing genitalia), but that doesn't matter. It's the exclusivity that counts! If it's no longer exclusive, why would anyone want to do it?
I've seen the light! The Senator has convinced me with this brilliant argument. Excelsior!

Good post but I don't understand the title.
To play devil's advocate a bit, I think Brownback's point is that the concept of marriage has already become watered down by things such as no fault divorce, approval of non-marital relationships, rise in out-of-wedlock births, etc. From his standpoint, this destabilizes family life. What he really wants to do, like all social conservatives, is bring back the social mores of the fifties or earlier.
The flaws in the argument are (1) there is no reason to think that having gays marry reduces the sacredness of marriage; in fact, it's probably the reverse; (2) it would probably be better if lots of people didn't get married; and (3) the cow is out of the barn already; and (4) really they just find gay marriage iccky.
The title: If Brownback believes that allowing more people to marry will reduce marriage, then encouraging more people to become terrorists will reduce terrorism.
The real problem with this whole non-issue is that ya'll have given every cuckoo in the land some sort of political power so now they're allowed to waste everyone's time and money with ridiculous debates like same-sex marriage. Up here in boring old Canada we have plenty of cuckoos who'd like to make a huge and endless deal of this, too, but clearer heads prevailed and said, "hey - most of us don't have a problem with this so shut up already". And that was pretty much the end of it. The moral of the story is: bigoted, homophobic, right-wing extremists don't belong in public office.
The second moral of the story is that Canadians are obviously very wise. No wonder we vacationed there this summer.
urban pedestrian, while I agree with everything you said, I can't quite get my mind around a Canadian who says "y'all" -- even ironically. I have to go lay down.
