Republican contenders: "We don't like you. Please vote for us."

Key Republican leaders are encouraging the party's presidential candidates to rethink their decision to skip presidential debates focusing on issues important to minorities, fearing a backlash that could further erode the party's standing with black and Latino voters. Debate no-shows worry GOP leaders
Whoa! You mean being openly contemptuous of certain groups of people and ignoring their invitations to speak may turn them against you? What a shock!

Seriously, at this point it seems like the Republicans are actively trying to lose the 2008 election.

They are trying to foist all the problems that the current administration got us into onto the next president, so why would they want to be the next president?

No, they WANT a democrat to win, so that the other party will have to act like an adult, come up with ways of paying for their excess, come up with a solution to Iraq, to healthcare, to so much that Bush just ignored. Then, when it comes time to run again in 2012, they can step up and blame the democrats for everything they caused, and try to sneak away with another presidency.

I fear it may work. It did when they did the same thing and Clinton won his first term. They were surprised he got reelected, though, and you can see how mad that got them at Bill.

I appreciate your cynicism :-) but I have a hard time imagining the Republicans being so disciplined that they would ever give up power for long term gain. (Frankly, I'm surprised they ever give up power.) I'm certain that each candidate fully hopes to win and these decisions are being made by the candidates themseles. Personally, I chalk it up to arrogance, elitism and incompetence.
