Firefly

I recently made an agreement with a friend who has foolishly resisted watching my DVDs of the most awesome show ever, Battlestar Galactica. I told him I'd watch all 13 episodes of Firefly and the movie, Serenity, if he started watching BG.

So, Rachel and I watched the first episode, Serenity, tonight. It was okay. I didn't love it, but I was entertained. The cast, many of whom I've seen in things I liked, was good and the world well created.

But the "western" thing is REALLY annoying. Twangy guitars, dusty towns, cowboy accents, even horses, for gosh sake. Man, is that crap annoying. And when they had a chance to make a Firefly movie, they gave it the same name as the first episode? Gee, that's not confusing or anything. Joss Whedon obviously took his cue from Charles Dickens whose classic A Tale of Two Cities should never be confused with his slash fiction novel, A Tale of Two Cities.

Since I know from personal experience that Firefly fans are only slightly more obsessed and only slightly less creepy than Babylon 5 fans, I expect this post will generate the most traffic ever on this blog.

Obviously, you should’ve taken a moment and chewed it over with a Twix before making such an agreement.

I really liked Firefly, and was sorry to see it go. That said, I still haven't taken the time to watch the movie, so I guess it's not exactly a priority for me. I will eventually. I like the Western touch, though. It's lawlessness in space, by jingo!

Eric, excellent point.

Ahtitan, I don't mind the lawlessness, it's the blatantness of the "ain't's" and the horses, and the six shooters that's bugging me. I hope it will grow on me (provided I can wash it off afterwards).

Yeah, you just have to kinda go with it. Accept it without question. Pretend you're President Bush.
