For over twenty years, the Republican mantra has been, “Government is bad. Government isn’t the solution, it’s the problem. We need less government to let the market come up with solutions.” What kind of weird issues do they have that they dislike government so much yet can't stand it when they're not running it?
The result? For over ten years, Republican control of Congress has lead to a gutting of federal regulations in every area. The current fiscal disaster is a direct result of the enactment of their philosophy.
Of course, the solution offered up by McCain/Palin is one of contradiction. On the one hand, Sarah Palin says that “Corruption and greed on Wall Street” caused the disaster and that the government needs to regulate. Seconds later, however, she says that Government is the problem and needs to get out of the way of the open market.
So which is it?
Frankly, I’m tired of government getting a bad rap. The government exists to help us live together and live well. With the right leadership, the government can do things that benefit us all and still preserve our rights under the Constitution. There are certain things that the government can and needs to do. Geez, the government took us to the Fracking Moon!
We’ve seen over and over that the market will not regulate itself. We’ve tried deregulation for 20 years and gotten gobsmacked all over the place.
It’s time to try something different.
