A little equal time

I blog a lot about issues with Christianity, its "foibles" if you will, because in America that's what I'm most exposed to. So, to be fair, below are a couple of horribly appalling stories about Judaism and Islam. Enjoy!

In Israel's ultra-Orthodox Jewish community, where the rule of law sometimes takes a back seat to the rule of God, zealots are on a campaign to stamp out behavior they consider unchaste.

They hurl stones at women for such "sins" as wearing a red blouse and attack stores selling devices that can access the Internet.

In recent weeks, self-styled "modesty patrols" have been accused of breaking into the apartment of a Jerusalem woman and beating her for allegedly consorting with men. They have torched a store that sells MP4 players, fearing devout Jews would use them to download pornography. Link

The only slightly amusing aspect of the story is that Orthodox Jews dress similar to the Amish, so the idea of them roughing people up paints kind of an amusing picture. But then again, they seem to be attacking women so it's not like they're being at all brave in these attacks.

A Muslim cleric has called for Saudi women to wear a full veil, or nigab, that reveals only one eye, in order to control seduction, the BBC reported Friday.

Sheikh Muhammad al-Habadan said that women in Saudi Arabia are encouraged to use eye makeup and look seductive when allowed to wear a veil that exposes both eyes. Link

"Gee, I'm sorry I raped that woman, but her eyes were just asking for it." Obviously, this cleric isn't going far enough. I mean one eye is still pretty provocative. Think how much less seductive women would be with a bucket over their head! Better still, they could just remove girls' eyes at birth. Now that would be unseductive!

Or maybe they should remove the eyes and install mirrors so these prehistoric, misogynistic monsters can always see themselves, the only thing they truly love.
