Yes, the past eight years have not been good to the United States of America. Incredibly, as if to put all that crapitude into perspective, things have gotten even suckier over the past few weeks and, as a special bonus, spread to the rest of the world. The financial crisis seems to guarantee that we'll be hurting for years to come.
Meanwhile, the McCain campaign, which we were told was going to be run with dignity and respect, is becoming increasingly negative in a desperate bid to stop its slide into oblivion. Republican crowds, not satisfied with their party running the country into the ground and afraid of anyone who's not white, are looking more and more like fascist rallies with people shouting to "kill" the "terrorist" Barack Obama, incited by Sarah Palin's rhetoric while McCain smiles. When McCain makes a tiny effort to calm them, they turn on him.
Cindy McCain, obviously from the Bizarro universe, claims that the Obama campaign is the most negative in history, while still-President Bush is almost happy for the crisis for another chance at bat before he leaves office, hoping that maybe he'll be able to solve at least one problem during his Presidency.
Years ago, when the Soviet Union fell, eastern Europe democratized, Iraq was contained, Middle Eastern terrorists stopped taking American hostages, I had high hopes that we were all marching into a better world.
Apparently I was wrong. Obama is going to have his work cut out for him.

I suspect Dan Piraro might object to your characterization.
And therein lies the danger in using FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, & Doubt) to try to whip your supporters into a mob... The FUD takes over, you lose control, you lose support by an who fear the mob more than what it is you are telling them to fear, and the mob then turns on you as you try to regain control.
Beware Dr. Frankeenpublican, for your monster is waking up. And he is the torch-bearing, pitchfork-wielding mob.
