For the past six months, gays and lesbians have been “allowed” by court order to marry in California. Thousands of couples have exercised this right. At next week’s election, the citizens of California will either confirm this right or reject it through Proposition 8, a Constitutional Amendment to ban gay marriage. If passed, Californians will not only rip rights away from thousands of human beings, but establish a terrible precedent, setting human rights back years.
Whether you respect them or not, to take away the right to marry now would be cruel, heartless and, frankly, evil. It would be an offense as wrong as those who wanted to prohibit “interracial” marriage in the 50's and 60's. Ironically, the chief proponents of this Proposition are those who most often claim to have a monopoly on “morality”, the religious. They are on the wrong side of this argument. Their actions are not moral, but suffused with hatred and prejudice.
Gay and lesbian couples deserve to have the same right to wed as all heterosexual couples in America. Californians, don’t take this right away from them. Vote NO on Prop 8.
If Prop 8 is defeated, California will stand as an influential beacon for human rights at the forefront of what is THE civil rights issue of the early 21st century.
