The building in which I work has some long hallways. Often, while I’m walking down the hall, I close my eyes to see how far I can walk without opening them. I know that I’ll hear someone coming and so I’m not worried about bumping into someone. What gets me is the fear that I’ll hit one of the walls. I can barely walk 40-50 feet without opening my eyes. Most of the time when I do, I’m still close to the center of the hall and was in no danger of bumping into anything. But on subsequent attempts my brain can’t convince the rest of me that I’m walking a straight path and I invariably feel anxious and open my eyes.
I know it’s irrational, but I just can’t master it. Of course, when I do master it, you can just imagine what will happen then . . .
