Animated History of the Internet
The following video is a really interesting 8 minute history of the Internet, 1957 to 2009. If you don't know much about how the Internet came about, watch it.
It's an interesting video, but it really only covers the hardware linkage structure, and the low-level communication protocols (in true geek form: the link, internet, and transport layers).
What most people truly think of as "the Internet" is email, web pages, and the like. This video does not cover application protocols like those at all, nor does it even discuss the fact that they exist. It is becasue of those application protocols we can use browsers and email applications and look at streaming video and talk on the phone and do our banking and ... and all at the same time.
A history of application protocols from the early days like HNSP & FTP all the way to modern ones like SOAP, VOIP, HTTP, etc would be a good companion piece.

Thomas Friedman's THE WORLD IS FLAT gives some really good detailed history on how all of this came to be, and where it is likely to go in the future.
