All right. Here it is. The easy solution to resolving the debt ceiling issue:
Just raise the debt ceiling.
The debt ceiling was and is a stupid idea which is supposed to give the air of fiscal responsibility but which doesn’t actually cause fiscal responsibility. And it may even be unconstitutional (if it were ever tested).
You don’t need to resolve the immensely complicated issues of the deficit, the cost of entitlements or anything else at this moment. I know the Republicans want to use this real problem in order to distract everyone with their fake problems, but both sides should just put that aside and vote on a clean bill to raise the ceiling. All this rancor, infighting, and screwing over the American public can stop while you resolve the immediate, actual, problem in a clean way.
Then you can get back to gutting spending, taking money from the poor, old people and students, and laying off government workers in the middle of a recession.
