A Measure of Mercy Granted

Tornadoes swept through several central states this weekend and thanks to early warning systems, developed through the application of science, relatively few people were killed or injured. Still, tragically, five lives were lost, including three children, and many homes and businesses destroyed. Link

To Kansas Governor Sam Brownback though, it’s another chance to shill for religion.
"God was merciful," Brownback said during an appearance on CNN.
Way to go, God! Coming to the rescue! Yes, God was merciful.

Well, except to the five people killed. I’m pretty sure the victims’ families don’t feel that God was particularly merciful. And those who lost their homes and livelihoods are probably not feeling too great either. Merciful, of course, would have been to prevent any death or destruction, certainly not a difficult task for an omnipotent being. But “God is mysterious” and all that.

Had I the power, I would have made sure that no one was killed and nothing was destroyed. But then, that’s just me with my non-godlike morality.
