Supreme Court Update the last
Good news, everyone!
DOMA, the Defense of Marriage Act, is dead. No longer will same-sex spouses be discriminated against under federal law. This was a huge victory.
The Court also held that the defense in the California Prop 8 case didn’t have standing to defend the law, so the appeal is vacated. This means that the district court decision is the final word and gay marriage is legal again in California. Another huge victory, although limited to California. This makes California the 13th state (plus DC) to allow same-sex marriage. Marriage equality is now available to 91 million Americans, almost a third of the U.S. population.
Good news, indeed.
