Lunchtime Haunts - American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial
We've been at our new building on 7th and D streets for a year and a half now, and I had never explored eastward towards the Capitol. Last week I did that.
This is what I found. (Click to embiggen)
This is the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial. It's bordered on the east by the Rayburn House Office Building (where I worked for three months in 1986 when I interned in a Congressional Office) and the US Department of Health and Human Services to the West. It's basically a big open area with a pool and some nice seating with a few panels describing the sacrifice of our disabled veterans. It's a nice spot.
I especially liked the tiny little parking lot for the Memorial that's set to the south. There are spaces for seven vehicles, and five of them are handicapped only, a nice accommodation for those the Memorial is intended to honor.
It was a bit overcast that day with no one about, so I'll have to return on a sunny day to fully appreciate it.
Edited to add: Apparently I visited the Memorial a few days before its one year birthday. It was dedicated on Oct. 5, 2014.

Nice to hear, I was under the impression that the memorial would never happen. Gary Sinise was directing the fundraising effort. He sent me a coffee mug with my name on it back in 2007. I find it handy at work, because I frequently fill it and then forget it, so people can always bring my cup to me lolol.
But seriously, I'm glad the memorial is here. Next time I am in DC, I will certainly check it out, and see where all my ceramic coffee mug dollars went.
