This video, a compilation of brief clips from every best visual effects winner in Oscar history, is pretty interesting. There are many notable omissions (The Wizard of Oz, Forbidden Planet, Bladerunner, Star Trek: The Motion Picture), mostly due to intense competition in particular years, but what's really notable is how amazing some vfx were even in the forties and fifties. Go George Pal!

The absolute most jarring transition is from a one of a kind classic winner in 1968 to a ridiculously silly winner in 1969. I'm pretty sure the Academy was embarrassed about that.
