When I was younger, I believed America was uniquely immune from fascism and tyranny. I thought that our Constitution and love of democracy and freedom meant that we wouldn't abide anything that approached the practices of fascist regimes. The last four years have shown how naive I was. In fact, you can go back decades to see the slow expansion and acceptance of fascism in the United States, almost exclusively from the conservative Right.
But I really didn't expect what happened last week.
Luckily for American democracy, the insurrection was instigated by an incompetent idiot and performed by his moron followers. When the seditionists broke into the Capitol, they found no hostages and mostly wandered around committing acts of vandalism, including smearing feces on the walls. Good plan. That'll keep Trump in office.
Of course, they also murdered a Capitol policeman and caused the deaths of four others.
Also, remember that many of them were there to lynch the Vice President.
This was insurrection. It was sedition. Everyone involved needs to be prosecuted to the full extent of the law to set an example. This includes Trump and Senators Hawley, Cruz and the Republican assholes who voted to contest Biden's election, even after the invasion.
Trump is the President for nine more days. The danger is not over. We are not safe. It's likely, if not inevitable, there will be more violence, even over the years of the Biden Administration.
It most certainly can happen here. It most certainly did happen here.
We must all be vigilant.
