This is why we can't have nice things, part a million

Around the country, Republican legislatures are enacting voting restrictions that bring back the worst of Jim Crow, specifically targeting the rights of people of color to vote. They do this because, otherwise, they can't win national elections.

In Washington, Republicans in Congress vote in lockstep to stop new Federal laws that would protect the most basic right of all Americans, to vote to choose who will govern this country. They do this because they don't value democracy and fight to stay in power at all costs.

In the Senate, two Democratic senators would rather protect an arcane, ridiculous Senate procedure, the filibuster, which allows a minority of Senators to prevent the body from passing anything Republicans don't want, than pass legislation to protect civil rights. They claim it's about encouraging bipartisanship, but they really do this because they are more interested in personal power, attention, and conservative principles than in democracy.

Note to Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema

None of the people you represent or those in the wider country give a flying fuck about preserving the filibuster, which has been used for decades to thwart progress and does absolutely nothing to promote "bipartisanship". Guess what else the people of this country don't care about? Fucking bipartisanship. The Republicans in Congress sure as hell don't. Do you recall a single Republican congressperson during the Trump years calling for cooperation with Democrats? Senate Republicans couldn't even produce 10 votes to investigate the January 6th crowd that stormed the Capitol in order to murder those same Republicans.

The filibuster stands in the way of helping Americans, whether it be protecting voting rights, promoting racial justice, providing healthcare, enacting gun control, rebuilding infrastructure, ensuring abortion rights, or any policy that is supported by the vast majority of Americans.

History will record the names Manchin and Sinema alongside Neville Chamberlain and Vidkun Quisling, two weak, confused men who collaborated with the enemies of democracy and helped bring about the suffering and deaths of millions. If Manchin and Sinema were on the right side of history, they could help millions and ensure a free and more fair America. Instead, they're helping Republicans to usher in the death of American democracy.
