I solemnly swear that this guy is an idiot

Is it too much to ask that our elected representatives show some respect for the diversity of American society? Have these wingnuts never heard of the melting pot?

When I raise my hand to take the oath on Swearing In Day, I will have the Bible in my other hand.

I do not subscribe to using the Koran in any way. The Muslim Representative from Minnesota was elected by the voters of that district and if American citizens don't wake up and adopt the Virgil Goode position on immigration there will likely be many more Muslims elected to office and demanding the use of the Koran. -
Rep. Virgil Goode, R-VA.

Of course, the whole idea of swearing-in is ridiculous. Exactly what kind of magic do they think this invokes? Is swearing on a bible a guarantee you won't be corrupt? If so, what book did Mark Foley, Tom Delay, Newt Gingrich, William Jefferson, Conrad Burns, and Randy "Duke" Cunningham, swear on? If you somehow believe that swearing on your holy book means something, then wouldn't you want Muslims to swear on the Koran? How would a Muslim swearing on a bible mean anything?

America has a long, proud history of producing Statesmen. Unfortunately, we seem to have forgotten how to do so.
