John Boehner is SO in touch with the American people

“Ensuring there's enough money to pay for the war will require reforming the country's entitlement system, Boehner said. He said he'd favor increasing the Social Security retirement age to 70 for people who have at least 20 years until retirement, tying cost-of-living increases to the consumer price index rather than wage inflation and limiting payments to those who need them.”

Make people work longer.  Sounds great.  I mean, most people have a couple of good years left to enjoy their retirement once they hit 70.

Or, here’s a radical idea.  END THE FRAKKING WAR!

Problem solved.

Aside from the war, though, I think we will eventually have to raise the retirement age some considering how much longer people are living. 70 today is not the same as 70 forty years ago.

The fact is, whatever your view of the war, it's not the lack of money, it's the unwillingness to raise taxes that's the problem. If you want to fight a war, you need to pay for it. LBJ tried to do the same thing--provide both guns and butter without paying for it and it didn't work. Obviously, Boehner would prefer to reduce social spending to maintain spending for the war, but it's not like there is some pile of money that we have to split up and that's all we have (although that's what Republicans think). That's the problem with the analogy they use comparing the country to an individual family; families have a finite amount of money that does not generally increase substantially. The country can always raise more money if it wants and it often makes sense to do so, just as it often makes sense for families to spend more money to invest in their kids' education or something.
