A Moral Failure

The Maryland House of Delegates failed to pass the bill establishing marriage equality today.  Without a guarantee of enough votes to win, the bill was sent back to Committee.  Not surprisingly, Republicans, churches and Christians led the fight in denying full civil rights to Maryland citizens.  It seems that some citizens are more equal than others.  Bigotry has won the day.

The thing that's really infuriating to me is that everyone knows that gay marriage is inevitable.  In just a few short years attitudes have changed considerably.  Five states plus DC allow full gay marriage and more will follow.  And if not by political action, the courts will declare the marriage bans unconstitutional.  Young people don't have the same prejudices and as the older generations die off, denying equality will be seen as the barbaric practice it is.  Any way you look at it, gay marriage will happen.

So why deny people rights in the meantime?  Why keep loving couples from realizing their dreams?  It's all so futile and senseless.

The fight is not over.  The Democrats will try again next year.

I'm disappointed in my state but hopeful for the future.
