In Which a Wal-Mart Cashier Made my Night

On Saturday night I went to Wal-Mart to pick up a couple of things.  Checking out at the Germantown Wal-Mart is usually a terrible, slow experience, regardless of how many cashiers they have working.  Fortunately, I was happy to find myself almost immediately in front of a cashier in the 15 items or less line.

As he rang up my stuff, the early twenty-something cashier said something I didn't catch.

"Excuse me?" I said.

He said the same thing again and I still didn't quite catch it.  Then I realized he had said my "Scarlet A" was cool.  He was talking about the Red "A" pin I've been wearing for the last few years.

I said thanks, and quite effusively, "You are the first person ever to acknowledge the pin and know what it means."

He asked where I got it and I told him they were for sale at the Richard Dawkins website.  He said that he has a Darwin fish on his car.  I told him I was a little afraid of putting one on mine for fear of getting my car key-scratched.  He said he's never had any trouble.

After he rang me up I shook his hand and departed happy, feeling a little joint fellowship and a little bit more connected to humanity.
