Who decides what medical procedures you can access?

Today the United States Senate voted on a Republican bill (the Blunt Amendment) that would allow any employer to dictate what types of medical care their health insurance would cover for their employees. The Republicans framed it as a bill protecting freedom of religion. Here’s what the bill would have done if it became a law.

This bill would have given YOUR EMPLOYER a veto power over ANY medical procedure YOU receive under your health insurance.

For example, if you work for a Jehovah’s Witness and you need a blood transfusion, your boss could say no, your health insurance doesn’t cover that.
If you work for a Christian Scientist who doesn’t believe in hospitals, your boss could say no, your health insurance doesn’t cover hospital stays.
If you work for an anti-vaxxer, your boss could say no, your health insurance won’t cover any vaccinations for you and your family.
If you work for a Catholic, your boss could say no, your health insurance won’t cover any contraception for you or your spouse.
If you work for someone who believes your lifestyle solely makes your health, your boss could say no, your health insurance doesn’t cover insulin for your diabetes.
If you work for someone who just doesn’t like you, your boss could come up with any reason to deny you access to any medical procedure they choose.

Now here’s the part you should really remember come this November:
ALL REPUBLICAN SENATORS EXCEPT ONE VOTED TO MAKE THIS BILL A LAW.
ALL DEMOCRATIC SENATORS EXCEPT THREE VOTED TO DEFEAT THIS BILL.
The Democrats voted for your freedom to choose which medical procedures you and your family may access. The Republicans voted to give that choice TO YOUR BOSS.
