Yes. He could have said nothing.

This small equivocation, if it was even that since states are the ones who set marriage laws, doesn't diminish how unprecedented this is.

Really? Your take on this is that it was a non-event?

I'll grant that the press often treats non-stories as huge spectacles, but across the political and media spectrum on both sides, pretty much everyone's take is that this is huge news.

What are you suggesting he should have said or done?
