My charity is Netflix

In discussing his refusal to release his tax returns, Mitt Romney likes to mention his charitable giving, including the money he tithes to the Mormon Church. This raises a couple of points.

First, charitable giving is not a substitute for paying taxes. Paying taxes (federal, state, local, property, sales) is the way we all contribute to the upkeep and improvement of this country. Charitable giving can be wonderful, but it’s not a substitute for money used to defend us, maintain roads and bridges, keep public parks and monuments open and protect consumers.

Second, the Mormon church requires all members to tithe 10% of their earnings to the church. Giving the church your 10% is not charity. It’s a membership fee.
