I went to see the current box office champ, Cloverfield, with Rachel on Saturday night. For those not familiar with the film, Cloverfield has a simple concept: mix "The Blair Witch Project" with "Godzilla". Really, that's all there is to it. It's a giant monster attacking New York City told from the point of view of those who, in these films, are usually found running around shouting "Gojira! Gojira!" just before they get stepped on.
So what did I think of it? I had a great time. The film has everything you would hope for given its concept. The monster is freaky and scary, there are some clever surprises, some moments of humor, some moments of real tension and suspense, and the characters are just compelling enough that you don't want to see them eaten. Most of the shots of the monster are fleeting, just as you would expect when someone is videotaping while simultaneously running for their life. This is a good thing because leaving you wanting more works for this film. When they do show the monster for a good long time, it's actually a bit disappointing, a mistake they make only once.
I'm torn as to whether or not the movie will work as well on DVD. On the one hand, it's supposed to be a home video, so it may translate well to watching it on your home TV. On the other hand, there is something to be said for the scope of the monster when seen on the big screen and if you see it with a good audience, that will add greatly to the experience.
Cloverfield was a really fun time at the movies.
Warning: Some people have reported motion sickness because of the handheld camera. I'd advise you to sit back in the theatre. We were pretty far back and had no problems whatsoever.

I saw this on Friday, and it's my opinion that any review that doesn't include the word "awesome" is inadequate.
I wanted to go right back in and watch it again when my buddy informed me that I'd missed something cool at the end. I'll probably see it again this weekend with Patty.
Also, be sure and stay for the credits, because the Overture the play is...wait for it...AWESOME!
Awesome.
Go to the IMDB entry for Cloverfield and click on the FAQ. There's a link to a recording of what's at the end. It's not something you really need to stay through the entire end credits to hear, frankly, but that's your call.
But it's really good. And should be heard loud. It's like a good coffee after the meal.
