The Republican Party has no interest in governance, and they haven't for 15 years. In power, all they want is more money and power for themselves. Out of power, they only want to obstruct.
Are we going to get some resurgence of communism or socialism in America? I do remember that Alice Cooper said that Milwaukee had 3 socialist mayors during their time. I couldn't believe that was true.
We have a strange relationship with "socialism". Many of our policies and programs might be considered socialism (social security, medicaid, unemployment insurance, etc.) and people love those programs. But the Right has so maligned the term, indeed the entire idea of the government helping American citizens, that to call oneself a socialist is near political suicide.
In a rational world, it wouldn't matter from which political ideology an idea comes from, what would matter is whether or not it works. I think our only hope is that Democrats can successfully rebrand some of the ideas we know would raise up Americans away from the socialism brand, like they did with the Affordable Care Act.
