Polar Bears put under protection
Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne listed polar bears as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act yesterday, saying the loss of Arctic sea ice in a warming climate could drive them to the brink of extinction in less than four decades. All good. And then he said this:
The most significant part of todays decision is what President Bush observed about climate change policy last month. President Bush noted that The Clean Air Act, the Endangered Species Act and the National Environmental Policy Act were never meant to regulate global climate change.Yes, so let's declare Polar Bears endangered, but not do anything that would actually help them. Because the President is wise in the ways of nature.
The President is right. Listing the polar bear as threatened can reduce avoidable losses of polar bears. But it should not open the door to use the ESA to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from automobiles, power plants, and other sources. That would be a wholly inappropriate use of the Endangered Species Act. ESA is not the right tool to set U.S. climate policy.”
This guy has obviously drank the koolaid. Just repeat after me: President Bush is always right. President Bush is always right.
