A modern gilded-age mystery

I totally agree with this. I would do the same thing.

I have the unfortunate answer for her. Bezos and his compatriots, like Musk, are sociopaths, only interested in the accumulation of wealth so they can control others and pretend that they've won at life. They don't want to be Batman, they emulate Lex Luthor.

Don't look to billionaires for answers, as they have none and don't have the generous human spirit to help others. We need to relieve them of some of their excess. They'll do fine and we can actually help others with what the billionaires don't need, don't deserve and can never use.

I've heard it put this way--good people don't become billionaires. Many, many times in their lives, people like Bezos and Musk have had the opportunity to choose between accumulating wealth or helping people/treating their employees well. The only way to become a billionaire is to, over and over, choose money over people.

Yep. Spot on.

Employee conditions at Amazon and Tesla have been in the news a lot recently, and I've never understood why these workers aren't paid amazing wages with the best benefits. Not only would that be good for them, and set a standard for the rest of the country, but it would also be good for Amazon and Tesla. The answer is that Bezos and Musk would rather have that money in their pocket, money they absolutely don't need, than help anyone else. Same with the Walton family and WalMart.
